As winter sets in, it's sometimes tempting to hang up our rackets - but you don’t have to! We find there's something really invigorating about playing in the crisp air, and with a few adjustments, you can keep your game sharp all season long.
Here are five essential ways to stay safe, warm, and competitive on the court this winter:
1. Choose the right clothing
Wearing the right gear is crucial when playing in colder weather. Pick layered clothing that allows you to regulate your body temperature. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away, add an insulating mid-layer, and finish with a wind-resistant outer layer. Cold muscles are more prone to injury, so take extra time to warm up before hitting the court. Incorporate dynamic stretches and light cardio to prepare your body for the match ahead. Pay special attention to your shoulders, wrists, and legs, as these areas can be particularly vulnerable in the cold.
2. Adjust foot work
Winter courts might be slippery, especially if there’s frost or moisture. Focus on taking smaller steps to maintain balance and control. This technique helps you react quickly and reduces the risk of slipping. Stay low in your stance to improve stability, allowing you to make more effective shots.
3. Restring Your tennis racket
The colder temperatures can often affect how your strings perform, making them feel stiffer than usual. Looser strings can enhance comfort and provide a better feel for the ball, helping you maintain your touch and control during play. Cold and stiff strings actually absorb less energy from the ball, resulting in less power and a "dead" feel. Stringing slightly looser than normal can help with this feeling and can also help prevent injuries.
4. Stay Hydrated
It’s easy to forget in cooler weather, but it’s just as important in winter as in summer. Dehydration can affect your performance, so drink plenty of water before, during, and after your match. Keep a water bottle handy, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
5. Be Mindful of Court Conditions
Always check before playing. If it’s too icy or wet, consider rescheduling your match to prevent injuries. It’s better to miss one match than to risk an injury that takes you out for the season! Or playing on indoor courts can also be a great alternative during particularly harsh conditions.
By following these tips, you can continue to enjoy tennis throughout the winter. A little preparation goes a long way in ensuring your game stays strong, no matter the season!
