How to Pick the Perfect Pickleball Paddle

How to Pick the Perfect Pickleball Paddle

Nicola Paul |

Pickleball is really taking off across the UK, and once you’ve had a few games, you’ll quickly realise your paddle plays a big part in how confident you feel on court.

With so many options out there, it can feel a bit overwhelming. That’s where we come in. At String Sports, we help players choose the right setup every day. Here’s our straightforward way to find a paddle that actually suits your game.

Start with Weight (this is the important one!)

If you get the weight right, everything else becomes easier.

  • Lightweight (7.0–7.5 oz)
Easy to handle and great for quick reactions at the net. A solid choice if you’re new or want more control.
  • Midweight (7.6–8.4 oz)
This is our go-to recommendation for most players. You get a really nice balance of power, control, and stability.
  • Heavyweight (8.5+ oz)
More power on drives and smashes, but can feel heavier over longer matches.

Not sure? Go midweight. It’s the safest (and most popular) place to start.

Shape: What feels right in your hand

Paddle shape can subtly change how you play.

  • Standard shape
Larger sweet spot, more forgiving, easier to control. Ideal if you’re building confidence.
  • Elongated shape
A bit more reach and power potential. Great if you like to play aggressively, but slightly less forgiving.

If you’re just starting out or still finding your style, we’d usually point you towards a standard shape until you gain more confidence in reaching those tricky shots.

Core Thickness: How the paddle feels

This is all about touch and response.

  • Thicker core (16mm)
Softer feel, more control, and better touch, especially around the net.
  • Thinner core (13–14mm)
More pop and speed off the face. Better suited if you like to hit through the ball.

Surface Material: Control vs power

The face of the paddle makes a difference to spin and feel.

  • Carbon fibre
Offers great control and spin, and tends to last well. A favourite as players progress.
  • Fibreglass
Gives you a bit more power and a lively feel. This is helpful if you want easier depth on your shots.

What we recommend (for most players)

If you’re playing socially or at club level, you don’t need to overthink it.

We usually guide players towards:

  • Midweight paddle
  • Standard shape
  • Thicker (16mm) core

It’s a setup that gives you control, consistency, and enough power to grow into your game.

Looking after your paddle

A few simple habits will keep it performing well:

  • Avoid dragging it along the court
  • Don’t leave it in extreme temperatures
  • If the surface starts to wear or lose grip, it might be time for an upgrade
